Carbon Steel Flange
What is a Carbon Steel Flange?
A carbon steel flange is a forged or machined ring used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and equipment in a bolted piping joint. Made from carbon steel, it provides high strength, good impact resistance, and excellent weldability at an economical cost. Carbon steel flanges are the most commonly specified flange type across industrial piping for oil, gas, water, steam, and general process applications.
Standards and Specifications
Carbon steel flanges are manufactured to ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, EN 1092, DIN, and JIS standards. Types include weld neck, slip-on, threaded, socket weld, lap joint, and blind. Sizes range from NPS 1/2 to NPS 48, with pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. Faces are raised face (RF), flat face (FF), ring type joint (RTJ), or male-female as required.
Materials and Grades
The most common grade is ASTM A105, a forged carbon steel for moderate-temperature service. Other grades include A350 LF2 for low-temperature service down to minus 46 degrees Celsius, Q235B and Q345B for general engineering, and A105N for normalized service. All material is fully traceable by heat number and supplied with mill test certificates.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings
Carbon steel flanges are rated per ASME B16.5 pressure-temperature charts, suitable for temperatures from minus 29 degrees Celsius to 425 degrees Celsius. Pressure classes range from 150 to 2500. The flange design includes proper hub thickness and bolt load calculations to ensure gasket seating and pressure containment under operating conditions.
Applications
Carbon steel flanges are used in oil and gas pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, water treatment, power generation, HVAC, shipbuilding, fire protection, and general industrial piping. They connect pipe spools to equipment, join valve ends, and provide dismountable joints wherever maintenance or modular assembly is required.
Advantages
Carbon steel flanges offer high tensile and yield strength, good ductility, and excellent weldability. They are more economical than alloy or stainless flanges while maintaining reliable pressure performance. Forged grain flow provides superior mechanical properties compared with cast or plate flanges. Standard dimensions ensure interchangeability across manufacturers.
Installation Guidelines
Select the correct flange type, class, and face to match the mating flange. Install the appropriate gasket, align bolt holes, and insert bolts in a staggered pattern. Tighten bolts in a cross-pattern in three passes to the specified torque. For high-temperature service, re-torque after thermal cycling. Use proper welding procedure when attaching the flange to the pipe.
Quality Assurance
Each carbon steel flange is marked with size, class, material grade, heat number, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes dimensional checks, visual examination, hardness testing, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Flanges are coated with rust-preventive oil and the gasket face is protected during shipping.
