What is a Tube Sheet?

A tube sheet, or tubesheet, is a heavy circular plate that holds and supports the tubes in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, boiler, condenser, or vessel. Precise holes are drilled through the plate in a calculated pattern, and each tube is rolled, welded, or expanded into its hole. The tube sheet forms a pressure boundary between the shell side and tube side fluids, making it a critical component in heat transfer equipment.

Standards and Specifications

Tube sheets are manufactured to TEMA (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association) standards and ASME BPVC Section VIII. Hole patterns follow triangular or square pitch layouts per TEMA R, C, or B classes. Diameters range from 150 mm to 3000 mm, with thicknesses from 20 mm to 300 mm or more. Hole tolerances are held to close limits to ensure proper tube expansion and sealing.

Materials and Grades

Carbon steel Q245R, Q345R, and ASTM A516 Gr 70 are standard for general heat exchanger service. Stainless steel 304/304L and 316/316L provide corrosion resistance for chemical and marine applications. Clad tube sheets with a carbon steel base and stainless or alloy cladding offer corrosion resistance at lower cost. Special materials include brass, aluminum bronze, titanium, and duplex stainless steel for seawater and corrosive service.

Design and Manufacturing

Tube sheet thickness is calculated based on pressure, diameter, corrosion allowance, and tube loading. Holes are drilled or CNC-machined in precise patterns, with grooved or plain holes depending on tube joint design. The face is machined flat and grooved for gasket contact. For floating head exchangers, the tube sheet may have a hub or bolted construction. Stress-relieving and NDE are standard for critical service.

Applications

Tube sheets are found in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, condensers, evaporators, boilers, feedwater heaters, oil coolers, and process gas coolers across oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, refrigeration, marine, and chemical industries. They separate process fluids while allowing heat transfer through the tube walls.

Advantages

Precision-drilled holes ensure uniform tube-to-tube sheet joints that resist leakage and corrosion. Clad construction provides a cost-effective solution where only the wetted surface needs corrosion resistance. TEMA-standard tube sheets are interchangeable across manufacturers, simplifying maintenance and replacement. The heavy plate construction withstands high pressure and tube loading in critical heat transfer service.

Fabrication and Installation

The tube plate is machined from a forged or rolled block, with holes drilled after final heat treatment. Tubes are inserted and expanded hydraulically or roller-expanded, with seal welds added for high-pressure or hazardous service. The tube sheet is then bolted or welded between the shell and channel flanges. Gasket surfaces are lapped to ensure a pressure-tight joint.

Quality Assurance

Each tube sheet is identified with material grade, heat number, drawing number, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes ultrasonic testing of the plate, dimensional verification of hole patterns, hardness testing, and liquid penetrant examination. Material test certificates and NDE reports are provided per project specifications. Machined faces are protected during shipping.
