Stainless steel pipe cap
What is a Stainless Steel Pipe Cap?
A stainless steel pipe cap is a corrosion-resistant butt-welded fitting used to seal the end of a pipe system. Manufactured from stainless steel plate or pipe and hot-formed into a dished shape, it is beveled for welding onto the pipe end. Stainless steel caps are specified where corrosion resistance, hygiene, or high-temperature oxidation resistance is required, making them ideal for chemical, food, pharmaceutical, marine, and clean-service piping.
Standards and Specifications
Stainless steel pipe caps are manufactured to ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.28, conforming to ASTM A403 WP grades and EN 10253. Sizes range from 1/2 inch to 48 inches (DN15 to DN1200), with wall schedules from SCH 10S to SCH XXS. Both concentric and eccentric configurations are available, with standard dished ends designed for pressure loading per ASME B31.3.
Materials and Grades
Common grades include ASTM A403 WP304/304L and WP316/316L. 304/304L provides general corrosion resistance for food, beverage, and architectural applications. 316/316L adds molybdenum for superior pitting and chloride resistance, used in marine, chemical, and pharmaceutical service. Other grades such as 321, 347, 904L, and duplex 2205 are available for specialized high-temperature or severe corrosive environments.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings
Stainless steel caps perform from cryogenic temperatures up to approximately 800 degrees Celsius for austenitic grades, with pressure classes of 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500. The low-carbon L grades provide better intergranular corrosion resistance after welding. Each cap is solution-annealed and pickled for maximum corrosion performance.
Applications
Stainless steel pipe caps are used in chemical processing, pharmaceutical plants, food and beverage production, water treatment, marine and offshore systems, pulp and paper, textile dyeing, and clean utility piping. They seal pipe ends in corrosive media, sanitary systems, and high-purity process lines where carbon steel would corrode or contaminate the product.
Advantages
Stainless steel caps offer excellent corrosion resistance, high strength at elevated temperatures, and a smooth, hygienic surface finish that is easy to clean. They resist oxidation and scaling at high temperatures and do not require internal coating. The butt-welded joint maintains full-bore continuity, and the material is fully recyclable.
Installation Guidelines
Use stainless steel filler metal matching the grade (ER308L for 304, ER316L for 316). Clean weld areas of oil, paint, and marking ink before welding. Use GTAW with argon backing gas inside the pipe to protect the root from oxidation. Post-weld pickling and passivation restore the protective chromium oxide layer. Avoid carbon steel contamination by using dedicated stainless tools.
Quality Assurance
Each cap is marked with grade, heat number, size, wall thickness, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes PMI (positive material identification), dimensional checks, hardness testing, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Caps are packed in wooden cases with plastic wrapping to prevent surface damage and contamination.
