What is a Thick Walled Pipe Cap?

A thick walled pipe cap is a heavy-duty pressure fitting designed to seal the end of a pipe system under extreme pressure and temperature conditions. Compared with standard caps, it features a significantly thicker wall that provides additional mechanical strength and pressure containment. Thick walled caps are commonly used in high-pressure hydraulic systems, deep-well oilfield applications, power boiler piping, and process industries where standard wall thickness would be inadequate.

Standards and Specifications

Thick walled pipe caps are manufactured to ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.28, with wall thicknesses exceeding schedule STD up to XXS and beyond. They also conform to MSS SP-75, ASTM A234 WPB, and custom project specifications. Sizes range from 1/2 inch to 24 inches, with wall thicknesses calculated using pressure design formulas per ASME B31.3. The dished end geometry is engineered to distribute hoop stress evenly across the cap.

Materials and Grades

Thick walled caps are supplied in carbon steel A234 WPB, A105, and Q235B for general high-pressure service. Stainless steel 304/304L and 316/316L grades provide corrosion resistance for chemical and marine applications. Alloy steel WP11, WP22, and WP91 grades are used in high-temperature power and refinery service. Material is sourced from certified mills and fully traced by heat number.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

The extra wall thickness allows thick walled caps to withstand pressures well above standard schedule ratings, often exceeding Class 900 and Class 1500 service. Temperature ratings depend on the selected material: carbon steel for moderate temperatures, alloy steel for elevated heat, and stainless steel for corrosive or cryogenic service. Each cap is hydrostatically tested to verify pressure integrity before shipment.

Applications

Thick walled pipe caps are used in high-pressure oil and gas gathering systems, deep-well injection piping, power plant boiler headers, hydraulic pressure systems, chemical process high-pressure loops, and supercritical steam lines. They are essential for sealing the ends of thick-wall piping where standard caps cannot meet the pressure design requirements.

Advantages

The increased wall thickness provides a larger safety margin for pressure containment, reduces stress concentration at the weld joint, and extends service life under cyclic pressure loading. Thick walled caps can be machined to precise tolerances and beveled for full-penetration butt welding. They eliminate the need for custom fabricated closures, providing a standardized, certified pressure-containing solution.

Installation Guidelines

Thick walled caps require proper bevel preparation with a wider groove angle due to the heavy wall. Preheat is recommended for carbon steel thicknesses above 25 mm, and post-weld heat treatment may be required for alloy grades. Use matching filler metal and perform multi-pass welding with interpass temperature control. After welding, conduct radiographic examination and hydrostatic testing to project specifications.

Quality Assurance

Each thick walled cap is marked with material grade, heat number, size, wall thickness, and pressure rating. Inspection includes dimensional verification, ultrasonic thickness measurement, hardness testing, NDE, and hydrostatic testing. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Products are coated with rust-preventive oil and packed in wooden cases for export.
