What is a Reducing Coupler?

A reducing coupler, also called a reducing coupling, is a threaded fitting with female threads on both ends of different sizes. It joins two male-threaded pipes of different diameters in a straight line. Unlike a bushing, which inserts into a port, a reducing coupler connects two pipes directly, providing an in-line threaded size transition for small-bore piping systems.

Standards and Specifications

Reducing couplers are manufactured to ASME B16.11 and ASME B16.14, conforming to MSS SP-79 and BS 3799. Size combinations range from NPS 1/8 by NPS 1/4 to NPS 4 by NPS 2, with pressure classes of 3000 LB, 6000 LB, and 9000 LB. NPT threads are standard, with BSPT and metric threads available. The forged body provides strength in a compact package.

Materials and Grades

Carbon steel A105 is standard for high-pressure service. Stainless steel 304/304H and 316/316H provide corrosion resistance for chemical and marine applications. Alloy steel F11, F22, and F91 grades handle high-temperature refinery service. Low-temperature A350 LF2 is available for cryogenic systems. All material is forged and traceable by heat number.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Reducing couplers are rated for 3000 LB, 6000 LB, and 9000 LB pressure classes. The forged construction provides high strength in small-bore sizes. Temperature ratings depend on material: carbon steel to 425 degrees Celsius, alloy steel to 600 degrees Celsius, stainless steel from cryogenic to 800 degrees Celsius.

Applications

Reducing couplers are used in instrument lines, pressure gauge connections, sampling systems, hydraulic tubing, small-bore process piping, and compressor control lines. They join two threaded pipes of different sizes in oil and gas, chemical, power, and hydraulic systems where a threaded in-line transition is needed.

Advantages

Reducing couplers provide an all-threaded, in-line size transition that requires no welding. They are easy to install, remove, and reposition. The forged body handles high pressure in compact dimensions. Both ends can be disconnected independently, making them ideal for instrument and small-bore maintenance.

Installation Guidelines

Apply PTFE tape or thread sealant to both male pipe ends. Screw one pipe into the coupler, then the other. Use a wrench on the coupler body to tighten, avoiding over-torque. For high-pressure or hazardous service, seal weld the joints after final assembly for added security.

Quality Assurance

Each reducing coupler is marked with both sizes, material grade, pressure class, and heat number. Inspection includes dimensional checks, thread verification, visual examination, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Couplers are protected with thread caps and packaged in small boxes for export.
