What is an Eccentric Reducer?

An eccentric reducer is a tapered fitting where one side is flat, causing the two pipe ends to be offset rather than centered on the same axis. This flat side allows the pipe to maintain a consistent elevation on horizontal runs. Eccentric reducers are essential on pump suction lines and liquid piping where preventing vapor or liquid pockets is critical to system reliability.

Standards and Specifications

Eccentric reducers are manufactured to ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.28, conforming to MSS SP-75 and ASTM A234. Sizes range from NPS 1/2 by NPS 1/4 to NPS 48 by NPS 40, with wall schedules from SCH 10 to SCH XXS. The flat side can be oriented up or down depending on service. Ends are beveled for butt welding.

Materials and Grades

Carbon steel A234 WPB is standard for general service. Stainless steel 304/304L and 316/316L provide corrosion resistance for chemical and marine applications. Alloy steel WP11, WP22, and WP91 grades handle high-temperature refinery and power service. Low-temperature A420 WPL6 is available for cryogenic piping. All material is traceable by heat number.

Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Eccentric reducers are rated for pressure classes 150 through 2500. The offset design allows the flat side to maintain pipe elevation while the tapered side transitions the bore. Temperature range depends on material: carbon steel to 425 degrees Celsius, alloy steel to 600 degrees Celsius. Each reducer is hydrostatically tested.

Applications

Eccentric reducers are used on pump suction lines to prevent vapor pockets from forming at the pump inlet, which could cause cavitation. They are also used on horizontal liquid piping where the bottom of the pipe must stay flat, and on gas lines where the top must stay flat to prevent liquid accumulation. They are common in oil, gas, water, and process piping.

Advantages

The flat-side design prevents liquid or vapor traps in horizontal piping, protecting pumps from cavitation and ensuring proper drainage. The tapered transition minimizes turbulence and pressure drop. Eccentric reducers maintain elevation alignment, simplifying support design on horizontal runs. They are the standard choice for pump suction and horizontal liquid lines.

Installation Guidelines

For pump suction and liquid service, install the eccentric reducer flat-side-down to keep the pipe bottom flat and prevent vapor pockets. For gas service, install flat-side-up to keep the top flat and prevent liquid accumulation. Bevel both ends, align, and complete full-penetration welds with matching filler metal.

Quality Assurance

Each eccentric reducer is marked with both sizes, grade, heat number, wall thickness, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes dimensional checks at both ends, flat-side verification, wall thickness measurement, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Reducers are coated with rust-preventive oil and bevel ends are capped for shipping.
