Carbon Steel Tee
What is a Carbon Steel Tee?
A carbon steel tee is the most common T-shaped branch fitting in industrial piping, made from carbon steel and beveled for butt welding. It splits or combines flow at a 90-degree branch connection, available in equal and reducing patterns. Carbon steel tees offer high strength, good weldability, and cost-effectiveness for oil, gas, water, steam, and general process piping.
Standards and Specifications
Carbon steel tees are manufactured to ASME B16.9 and ASME B16.28, conforming to MSS SP-75 and ASTM A234 WPB. Equal tees have all ends the same size; reducing tees have a smaller branch. Sizes range from NPS 1/2 to NPS 48 (DN15 to DN1200), with wall schedules from SCH 10 to SCH XXS. Socket weld and threaded tees per ASME B16.11 are also available for small-bore service.
Materials and Grades
The standard grade is ASTM A234 WPB, a carbon steel fitting suitable for moderate-temperature service. Other grades include A420 WPL6 for low-temperature service down to minus 46 degrees Celsius, A105 for forged types, and Q235B/Q345B for general engineering. All material is fully traceable by heat number and supplied with mill test certificates.
Pressure and Temperature Ratings
Carbon steel tees are rated for pressure classes 150 through 2500, with temperatures from minus 29 degrees Celsius to 425 degrees Celsius. The branch junction is reinforced by the tee geometry. Each tee is normalized and hydrostatically tested before shipment.
Applications
Carbon steel tees are used in oil and gas pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, water treatment, power generation, shipbuilding, HVAC, fire protection, and general industrial piping. They create branch connections for instruments, safety valves, drains, vents, sampling points, and utility take-offs.
Advantages
Carbon steel tees offer high tensile strength, good impact resistance, and excellent weldability at an economical cost. The butt-welded joint creates a permanent, leak-free connection. Standard dimensions ensure interchangeability. They are the default choice for general industrial piping where corrosion resistance is not required.
Installation Guidelines
Bevel all ends, align the tee with the run and branch, and tack weld. Complete the three butt welds using GTAW root and SMAW fill passes with matching filler metal. For thick-wall applications, apply preheat and post-weld heat treatment. Radiographic inspection verifies weld integrity. Provide support near the branch.
Quality Assurance
Each carbon steel tee is marked with size, grade, heat number, wall thickness, and manufacturer's stamp. Inspection includes dimensional checks at all ends, wall thickness measurement, visual examination, and NDE when specified. Material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are provided. Tees are coated with rust-preventive oil and bevel ends are capped for shipping.
