How to Measure Pipe Fittings: A Practical Guide for Buyers

2026-10-27 10:20:48

The Basics of Fitting Measurement

Ordering the wrong size fitting is a costly and common mistake. Understanding how to measure elbows, tees, and reducers ensures that the parts you order will fit your existing piping system correctly.

Measuring Elbows

To measure an elbow, you need the nominal pipe size (NPS), the schedule (wall thickness), the angle (90 or 45 degrees), and the radius type (long radius or short radius). Long radius elbows have a center-to-end dimension of 1.5 times the NPS. Short radius elbows use 1.0 times the NPS. Measure from the center of the elbow to the end face for verification.

Measuring Tees

A tee is identified by the run size and the branch size. An equal tee has the same size on all three ends. A reducing tee has a smaller branch than the run. Measure the outside diameter of the run ends and the branch end separately. Also note the overall length and the branch height from the centerline.

Measuring Reducers

A reducer is specified by the large end NPS and the small end NPS, plus the schedule. For concentric reducers, measure the overall length. For eccentric reducers, note the orientation mark. The wall thickness may differ at each end, so record both schedules if they differ.

End Preparation Matters

Buttweld fittings have bevelled ends for welding. Socketweld and threaded fittings have different end preparations. Always confirm the end type when ordering. A quick verification with a vernier caliper on the outside diameter can prevent a mismatched order.
